Project Overview

Fitz is a fitness app I designed as part of a freelance project to create a concept that addresses the needs of fitness enthusiasts seeking personalized workout plans and progress tracking. The goal was to develop a user-friendly and visually engaging mobile app that motivates users to achieve their fitness goals.

As the freelance designer, I collaborated with a client to define the app's core features and user flows. I conducted user research, designed interactive prototypes, and developed a cohesive design system to ensure an intuitive and consistent experience.

Project Goals:
To design a fitness app that offers customized workout plans, progress tracking, and motivational features, focusing on intuitive navigation and an engaging visual experience.

The Problem

A significant shift in workout routines after the pandemic

During the pandemic, traditional fitness routines were disrupted, leading to a significant shift towards home workouts and digital fitness solutions. This transformation created an opportunity to explore how technology could help people stay active.

As a UX designer, I worked on this side project to design an iOS fitness app, Fitz, aimed to help millennials maintain a consistent workout routine amidst their busy schedules.

Let's dive deeper into this...

User Research

To better understand the needs & pain points of my users...

I recruited participants that meet the following criteria:

  • Millennials in their 20s-30s.

  • Reside in Canada.

  • Have exercised at home before at various levels.

  • Comfortable with using technology.

Research Synthesis - Affinity Mapping

By grouping the insights from these interviews, I identified four key themes that set my design direction

  1. Content and Access: Easy access to tailored fitness content is crucial.

  2. Motivations and Social Support: Social interactions boost motivation, but there are also distractions that can hinder consistency.

  3. Time Management: Busy schedules are a significant barrier.

  4. Personalized Routine and Progress: Finding and sticking to a tailored routine is challenging.

To solve this issue...

How might we encourage millennials to maintain regular physical activities, so that they can incorporate fitness into their lifestyles for their overall well-being?

User Stories

Ideate tangible features based on interview findings through user stories

By creating user stories, I was able to ensure that FitLife's design and features were deeply aligned with the real-world needs and behaviors of its target users.

Initial Design

Start a Workout Task Flow

My design process began with the typical way users explore a range of workout options. They then select one to examine more closely and start their workout.

The Challenge

However, how can we encourage users to start their workout?

Looking back at my persona, she is a working professional that does not have enough time and knowledge to build effective and efficient workout routines for herself. Therefore, I decided to add the feature of letting the user quickly create a training plan with the help of AI. The most engaging way to get started is by having an intuitive and casual conversation with Lilia, our AI bot agent!🤖

And how can we facilitate action?

Now that the training plan has been created with our power AI bot, Lilia 🤖, the current challenge is: how can we encourage users to ACT NOW? and integrate this into their daily lives which will eventually turn into their habits?

Project Evaluation

• Comprehensive research to inform design decisions:

Conducting extensive secondary research on the problem and user research is essential to understand the impact of the issue and the demand for a solution, ensuring it's desirable for humans, feasible with technology, and viable for business.

• Prototyping for Iteration

Throughout the project, I applied the Double Diamond design process as my guiding framework. This allowed me to systematically explore and define user needs in the divergent stages, then converge on refined solutions through iterative cycles of prototyping and testing. This iterative process has led me to go through several iterations, resulting in a more robust and optimized user experience.
