Project overview

Instagram is a popular social media for people to post photo and share it to the public. The goal of this project is to design a new feature for Instagram by researching its interface, interaction patterns, features and users.

The objective of this project is to learn about exploratory and evaluative research in order to develop understanding of a user interface. In addition, put understanding of a UX design into practice by conducting user interview, creating persona, making user journey map, doing wireframes and lastly designing mockups for both interface and interactions.

Project process

RESEARCH & INTERVIEW

We firstly did research of Instagram on its interface design, interaction patterns and logo design, we conduct user interviews with multiple Instagram users from different ages to learn the user mindsets. We asked them questions including: How long have you used Instagram? What do you use it for? How would you rate this application with a scale of five? Why?

ANALYZE RESULTS

After the interviews, we generated their answers and organized them into categories of beginner and intermediate-level users in order to analyze the results.

GET INSIGHT

Advantages: Clean and simple interface that allows user to explore posts and could access to different pages easily.

Disadvantages: For the beginner users, the icon of different button might be a bit confusing to them, for example, users might not know double tapping could like a post.

From the interview, we also learned that 63% of the Instagram users feel frustrated when they unable to re-edit the photos after posting them. By clicking into the options of an existing post, there is edit caption feature but not edit image features.

PERSONA & WORKFLOW

Based on the data we collected from research and interviews, we created a persona including her bio, goals and scenario and introduced her frustrations. In addition, we made user flow using Adobe Illustrator to explain the her work flow of using Instagram for different purposes.

INTRODUCE NEW FEATURE

Based on the frustrations we learned from Instagram users, we developed three different approaches of new features to resolve the problems. I suggested new features of editing image after posting it and switching order of the posts in user’s own feed. I also helped Natalie refine her idea of setting target audience for a post.

RE-ARRANGE THE ORDER OF POSTS

In this feature, by long pressing the

CUSTOMIZE PLAN

Users could customize their plans by selecting from different categories and add them to their plans by clicking on the add button.

Project evaluation

From this project, I realized the importance of playtesting. Game designer could not only observe how people learn to play their game in a way to reflect themselves, but also hear how other people think about the game. By conducting playtesting sessions, I learned that making a good rule sheet is critical as it is the first step that people learn about the game, a short and clear rule sheet could increase the interest of people. In addition, a good game does not come from only one iteration, several iterations are needed to get feedback and refine the game.
